The authority’s decision is based on the fact that all camera surveillance at the school took place around the clock and that the cameras’ recording area was not limited but instead filmed for large areas. Among other things, corridors and stairwells in connection with toilets and student lockers have been monitored.
The decision is not appealed
Now the Privacy Protection Authority orders the school to pay a fine of SEK 800,000 to the education board in the city of Stockholm.
– It is the principal who has the opportunity to appeal and they have decided not to do so, which I also think is wise, says Katrin Burström, principal at Aspudden’s school.
Camera surveillance must be limited
Following the decision of the Swedish Privacy Protection Authority, camera surveillance must be limited during the day. But due to the school previously having problems with arson, they are therefore allowed to keep the cameras outside the toilets in the junior high school. Outside school hours, surveillance may continue to take place at the other locations in the school.
