The Detroit Red Wings have had some tough seasons behind them. But now Steve Yzerman’s team building seems ready to take off. There are plenty of talented Swedes in the organization, but it is former Frölunda forward Lucas Raymond who stands out. He has already become one of the key players in Detroit’s offense.
William Nylander has a similar role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Today’s Leafs are teeming with offensive stars, and Nylander is undoubtedly one of them. The Swede produces forward, but is also skilled defensively.
Of course, the rich history of both teams also helps make this match stand out. Few teams are as mythical as the Red Wings, who during their last period of greatness really leaned on Swedish players. The list can really be made as long as you want, but you have to mention Nicklas Lidström, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmström.
Toronto may not have had as many Swedes, but those who played in the blue-and-white shirt did not go unnoticed. We only say Börje Salming and Mats Sundin…
It’s something extra for us Swedes when these teams meet in North America, in a “regular” regular season match. Now, when they meet in Stockholm, it’s something even bigger. A “larger than life” experience. And YOU have the chance to be there. Good luck!
In addition: the exciting teams Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators are also coming to the Globe. Talk about hockey entertainment!
