Back pain, known to almost everyone, is benign in the vast majority of cases. But sometimes it can signal a more serious problem. When should back pain worry you? The answers from Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of Doctissimo.
Also called the pain of the century, back pain is one of the leading causes of pain. Generally benign, it can however be associated with other symptoms and reveal a more serious pathology. When to worry? Our npis expert specifies the cases where it is important to consult.
Sudden, intense pain
“If you experience sharp back pain for no apparent reason (such as a fall or exertion), this may be cause for concern.” explains Dr. Gérald Kierzek.
Pain that does not improve with rest
In the same way, “pain that persists or worsens, even after rest, deserves special attention” explains the doctor.
Pain with weakness, numbness or tingling
“If you feel weakness, numbness, or tingling in your legs, this may indicate nerve compression.” reveals the specialist.
Pain with bladder or bowel problems
According to the medical director of Doctissimo, “loss of bladder or bowel control, or an inability to urinate, may be a sign of spinal cord compression, requiring urgent medical intervention; we’re talking about cauda equina syndrome.
Pain associated with fever
“Back pain associated with fever may indicate an infection, such as spondylodiscitis.” indicates Gérald Kierzek.
Pain and unexplained weight loss
According to the doctor, “If you are losing weight for no apparent reason and are experiencing back pain, it could be a sign of an underlying condition, such as cancer“.
Pain and a history of cancer
“If you have a history of cancer and develop new back pain, seek medical attention immediately” recommends the specialist.
Nocturnal pain
“If the pain wakes you up at night or is more intense when resting, this may be cause for concern. There ankylosing spondylitis produces this type of so-called inflammatory pain“explains the doctor again.
Persistent pain in the elderly
“People over the age of 50 with persistent back pain should seek medical attention, as the risk of serious conditions, such as fractures due to osteoporosis, increases with age” adds the medical director of Doctissimo.
Pain following trauma
“If your back pain is the result of trauma, such as a fall or car accident, it is essential to seek medical attention.” he concludes.
