It is striking that the Dutch language is usually a requirement in smaller, independent stores in Utrecht, as is evident from the NOS tour of businesses in the city center. For example, the British Florence Mitchell-Green works in the gift shop ‘It all starts with a Postcard’ on Twijnstraat. “I always start in Dutch and that works 80 percent of the time. But if people have a specific question, I have to switch to English,” she tells NOS.
