The Swedish-Estonian submarine cable exposed to external influences

The underwater pipeline between Finland and Estonia has likely been exposed to physical external influences. This is stated by Defense Minister Pål Jonson for TV4 Nyheterna. At the same time, the government states that there is probably a connection with the other damaged lines in the Baltic Sea.
– The cable between Sweden and Estonia has been exposed to a physical impact, says Pål Jonson (M) to TV4 Nyheterna.

It was earlier this week that damage to the telecommunications cable between Sweden and Estonia was discovered. The government now announces that, via Estonian authorities, it has received information indicating that the cable has likely been exposed to a physical impact.

– We are in close dialogue with Estonia and Finland, says Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M).

The Defense Force’s submarine rescue vessel, HMS Belos, is currently investigating the site of the suspected sabotage.

– We expect results within a few days, says Pål Jonson (M).

The other week, damage was found to a gas pipeline and a telecom cable between Finland and Estonia. Shortly afterwards, damage was found to the cable between Sweden and Estonia. The government together with the Estonian authorities are now making the assessment that there is a connection between the three events.

At the same time, NATO is strengthening its presence in the Baltic Sea. The defense alliance sends several units to the Baltic Sea where the suspected sabotage against various cables has taken place. That’s what the defense alliance’s spokesperson Dylan White writes on X.

Four minesweepers are on their way as well as reconnaissance aircraft.
