Diablo 4 is now on Steam and the first reviews are in

With the start of Season 2, Diablo 4 was released on Steam on October 17, 2023. Can it top the disastrous launch of Blizzard’s last release, Overwatch 2, on the platform? We at MeinMMO have looked at the first reviews.

The second season of Diablo 4, the “Season of Blood”, started on October 17th, albeit with some complications. At the same time, the action RPG was released on Steam and can now be played directly on the Steam Deck.

Our colleagues at GameStar have summarized for you why Diablo 4 was in a difficult situation when it launched on Steam.

Only 51% positive reviews for Diablo 4 on Steam

What do the reviews look like after one day? One day after release, Diablo 4 is rated “Balanced” by 630 reviews on Steam. 51% of players recommend the game, but 49% have given a negative rating (as of October 18, 2023, 6:15 p.m.).

So far, only one positive rating can be found among the first 20 reviews in German and English, which Steam displays as the “most helpful”.

Players mainly complain about difficulties loading the game, linking to the Battle.net account or expressing their general frustration with the monetization in Diablo 4. We have put together some statements for you here:

  • DonEsteban: “I’m really salivating. What a desolate state and what a modest Steam release.[…]“
  • Vossi: “Since I can’t progress any further in the game than the Blizzard LOGO right at the start of the game, I’m requesting a refund. I can definitely look at the picture somewhere else for free.”
  • ⛧ M†ropele ⛧: “During my childhood, Blizzard could do no wrong. As an adult, they can’t do anything right.” – This review has been found helpful by more than 11,000 users.
  • What is noticeable, however, is that the negative reviews tend to record significantly less playing time on their accounts. They stay carefully under the 2 hour mark within which you can easily return a game on Steam.

Some wrote in their reviews that they requested a refund. It gives the impression that some players bought Diablo 4 just to write a negative review and then quickly got the money back.

Among the positive reviewers you will find those who have already spent a few hours playing Diablo 4 on Steam. For example, they praise how well the game runs on the Steam Deck.

Overall, the Steam release of Diablo 4 has been a bit bumpy so far, but at least it’s better than Overwatch 2:
