(Finance) – “The government is firmly committed to the issue of nuclear power. This is the basic choice”. This is what the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, speaking at a nuclear conference organized by iweek. “There was reluctance to talk about nuclear power. Since the latest polls, the country’s picture has changed a lot, in particular – highlighted Pichetto – thanks to young people. There is a new and modern sensitivity. The choice we have made as a Government and as a ministry competence was to establish the national platform and to unite the system of the major companies. The mandate that has been entrusted to the platform is a specific and time-bound mandate. The aim is to give the Italian government the contribution of a path, a road map , actions to be shared and defined, an accompanying path of strong research and experimentation”.
“The experts – said Pichetto – tell me that nuclear power is feasible and achievable in the early 2030s. We are not talking about third generation, but about fourth generation, modular reactor and fusion”.
As Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and minister of Infrastructure, even the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, has no problem saying yes to a nuclear power plant in his native Turin. “I have absolutely no problem saying yes to a reactor in my city – he concluded Picket – because I’m the first to say that it has to be something that has safety guarantees. And the research says we’re going to get something very safe.”
