Broca’s area is an area located in the brain, associated with language in humans.
Definition and role of Broca’s area
Broca’s area designates one of the three areas of the brain responsible for language in humans (the second is Wernicke’s area and the third is located at the parietal level). It owes its name to the French surgeon, Paul Brocaat the origin of its discovery in the 1860s. It is thanks to this cerebral area that it is possible for humans to have articulated language sinceit controls the lips, tongue, pharynx, larynx and palate. Broca’s area is located in the posterior part of the left frontal lobe. Thus Paul Broca said that man speaks “with the left hemisphere” of the brain.

Aphasia is a language and communication disorder which occurs after damage to the brain. Depending on the brain area affected, we speak ofBroca’s aphasia or aphasiae Wernicke. When it is Broca’s area which is affected, the patient expresses himself poorly but understands everything that is said to him.
