Learn Swedish – by singing

A new learning method is a success among the SFI students in Ludvika. Singing phrases is supposed to promote language learning and was something that was started last spring.

– It fits much better when you have sung it a lot of times, says Helena Engström in Efter fem.

In Ludvika, a new method has been adopted at SFI, Swedish for immigrants, which has been successful. Singing is used to teach the Swedish language in a new way, something P4 Dalarna was the first to report on. It is for those taking A-levels that this learning method is now being tested.

– I have them once a week and then we sing different phrases, says Helena Engström in Efter fem.

Promotes language learning

They work so that what they go through in the regular lessons, where they talk instead, is also taken up during these lessons so that they can be trained in phrases.

– It fits much better when you have sung it a lot of times, says Helena Engström.

Research has shown that music can promote language learning and therefore they have now chosen to test this method. Something that was started last spring with those who were at the B level, who had thus progressed a little further, before testing this at the A level.

Make students successful

But it is not ordinary carols that are sung. There is a material with slightly different structures, such as if you work with opposite words:

– I’m hungry, you’re full, Helena Engström sings with Blinka lilla stjärna’s melody to demonstrate.

And with the students, it seems to hit home.

– You may be tired when you arrive, but you are alert when you leave, says Helena Engström.
