Fragile democracies…
Roland Marca, Grand-Champ (Morbihan)
Abnousse Shalmani is absolutely right. Our democracies are indeed “herbivores” and risk being crushed by “carnivores”, how sad to see that… We will wake up one day, but we will pay dearly for our cowardice and our carelessness. Thank you for “shaking” us! (“Do liberal democracies know how to defend themselves?”, by Abnousse ShalmaniL’Express of September 28.)
School and contradictory injunctions
Cécile Sallée, Bordeaux (Gironde)
As a teacher and parent of a student, I would like to salute Laureline Dupont’s excellent summary concerning the contradictory injunctions and inconsistencies of both sides concerning National Education. Everything is there, both on the teacher’s side and on the parents’ side! Unfortunately, I am not at all sure that they will be able to recognize themselves because they always have, according to them, good reasons to be the exception which confirms the rule, which should only apply to others… Thank you however of this piercing “eye”. (“The school, the sanctuary and the hypocrites“, L’Express of September 28.)
Being a parent means being responsible
Madeleine Gibon, Saumur (Maine-et-Loire)
For several decades, children and adolescents have had no sense of respect for others or their superiors. Unfortunately, some parents do not set a good example for them, communicating little with them to explain the prohibitions. It is true that they themselves are captivated by social networks, always in front of their smartphone or computer! How many oppose teachers, or even attack them in front of their children? Being a parent means being responsible! (“Violence at school, parents of harassers: what responsibility?“, L’Express of September 28.)
Passive collusion
Christian Anub, Vouzeron (Cher)
If we want to tackle school bullying, we must denounce the passive collusion of parents – without forgetting that of teaching staff. This would make it possible to indict them, try them and sentence them to heavy fines, or even prison. It would also be justified to withdraw the various allowances they receive and to publicly display their condemnation. (“Violence at school, parents of harassers: what responsibility?“, L’Express of September 28.)
Strange Senate
Eric Garnier, Villemomble (Seine-Saint-Denis)
La France insoumise and the National Rally, whose candidates together gathered 45% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election, obtained respectively 0 and 3 senatorial seats, out of 348, or 0.8% of the seats. Of course, the types of voting differ, but still: what is the name of the Senate? (“Senatorial elections: domination of the right confirmed, Macronist setback and return of the RN“, on lexpress.fr)
Camus, target of obscurantism
Charles Kinski, Nantes (Loire-Atlantique)
“The evil in the world almost always comes from ignorance,” wrote Albert Camus. With Joe Biden’s United States representing the height of ignorance, it is not surprising that one of their academics, Oliver Gloag, flaunts his astonishing ignorance and wishes to “forget Camus”. The work of the same name is, it must be said, a masterpiece of Orwellian newspeak – and History continues to prove the two great thinkers who were the authors of 1984 And Plague. We must undoubtedly see it as a symbol of our post-modern societies: post-truth and ignorance elevated to academic knowledge, racism disguised as anti-racism and the toxic influence of the United States on a France and a Europe affected by of Stockholm syndrome. But by attacking Camus, the “intersectional” neo-identitarians (this is a euphemism) pay him the most beautiful homage possible: that of vice to virtue. (“Albert Camus at L’Express: the passion for commitment“, L’Express of July 27.)
An exceptional number for our 70th anniversary
1953-2023. On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, L’Express will be presented next week in exceptional form. On the menu: an in-depth look back at the decades past with the great writers of this journal, from Albert Camus to Raymond Aron, and an astonishing projection on the seventy years to come, with the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi , ; the great cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker; the director of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Thomas Jolly and the co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates. This mook will appear the day after the equally exceptional conference which will be held on October 18 in Paris. It will be accompanied, on our site, by videos describing the production of the newspaper and episodes of La Loupe devoted to the major issues of tomorrow and the portraits of Françoise Giroud and JJSS. Happy birthday !
