Janne Andersson’s time as national team captain got off to a great start, and after the 2018 World Cup, the national team captain was one of Sweden’s most popular and beloved sporting profiles. But over time, Andersson has become more and more questioned, and in the last year the results have not gone with the national team, to say the least.
Leaving the national team
Sweden missed out on making it to the WC in Qatar, at the same time they have collapsed in the Nations League series, where they will play in the C division next year. In 2023, there have also been several leaden results in the European Championship qualifiers, and now a miracle is required for Sweden to progress to next year’s playoffs in Germany. On Monday, a match against Belgium awaits, and Sweden are, to put it mildly, not favorites in the match.
It is already clear that Janne Andersson will leave his position as national team captain if Sweden misses out on the European Championships, which will therefore be determined on Monday. In recent months, Janne Andersson has also received a lot of criticism regarding how he handles the media, and the answers he gives in connection with press conferences. On Monday, many people reacted to the union captain’s answer when he was asked who he would most like to see as his successor.
– I couldn’t care less, answered Andersson.
Sawed for the answers
The answer caused, among others, Marcus Leifby, columnist at Aftonbladet, to react.
“You can also hope that there will be a good, talented coach. It is weak to become as bitter as Janne has become. Weak,” he writes on Twitter.
But it was other things that happened at the press conference that got reactions. SVT’s reporter Johan Kücükaslan has posted a clip on the platform X, formerly Twitter, where he writes: “Fun with national team week again!”.
There, among others, Janne Andersson reacts strongly to a question from Kücükaslan that “many in the national team want to see a new identity.
– Many players? You say many players there, Andersson said.
When Kücükaslan says that he spoke to three players who said so, Andersson replies:
“Are there many? Three out of 26 is a lot? But many you say.”
The answers from Andersson have caused many on social media to see red, and many believe that the national team captain went too far.
“He should step down. Today,” writes presenter and football profiler Jesper Hofmann.
“That you can be so friendly when he is so rude,” writes another.
