A single minute (!) would have saved everything

A single minute would have saved everything

Pacific Rim is one of the most entertaining sci-fi films of the last 15 years. You would think that in a story with huge battles between giant robots and aliens, not much can go wrong. Pustekuchen: Pacific Rim 2: Uprising flopped miserably five years later, according to many fans because director legend Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) was no longer there. Del Toro now revealed the reason for this. And it makes you want to tear your hair out.

Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi return in Pacific Rim 2 failed for incredible reasons

Speaking to Collider, Del Toro explained:

We prepared [Pacific Rim 2] before and then something completely crazy happened. [Die Produzenten] had to pay a deposit for the studio halls by five o’clock, otherwise we would have lost the filming location for many months. I reminded them, but they just didn’t meet the deadline. Later they said, “Well, we can shoot in China.” Then I replied: “What do you mean by ‘we’? I’m doing Shape of Water now.”

Pacific Rim fans won’t believe their ears. A single minute might have saved Pacific Rim 2, Instead, Del Toro had to resign due to time constraints. Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus) took the reins. When the film was released in theaters in 2018, it grossed far too little money for its budget of $150 million (via Box Office Mojo) and was well below the result of its predecessor (via Box Office Mojo). The production of a third film has since been questionable.

It’s a mistake to blame DeKnight’s talent for the flop, but it was, after all, his first feature film. Del Toro was familiar with the creative vision, had decades of directing experience, and his name alone would have given him more leeway in making the film.

Since then, the painful what-if has plagued more than just fans. Del Toro himself admits that he never watched the sequel out of self-protection. That would be like a home video of your ex-wife. It’s bad when it’s good and even more terrible when it’s bad.
