Sweden lost the fateful meeting against Austria in September.
Now national team star Dejan Kulusevski is questioning the team’s tactics in the match.
– It only lasted one half against Austria, says the Tottenham player to SVT.
Sweden needed to win against Austria in the European Championship qualifiers to have a reasonable chance of making it to the 2024 European Championship in Germany. Blågult had a good first half at the Friends arena, but failed to score and at halftime it was 0-0. In the second half, Austria came out stronger, and the meeting ended 1–3 to the away team.
Kulusevski’s criticism
Sweden’s only goal was scored by Emil Holm in the final minutes and was just a consolation goal that meant nothing. The game system for the day tells The dough Kulusevski was a mixture of the national team’s “old” and “new” way of playing, which neither nor has generated success in recent times.
– Recently, it was like “okay, we’ll meet in the middle”. We had a training session and went into the match against Austria. This collection was the only time we practiced playing a little differently. That is perhaps why it only lasted one half against Austria, says Kulusevski to SVT.

The Tottenham Hotspur player thinks that the change in the game system, as the national team captain Jan Andersson is highly responsible for, should have been done earlier.
– We felt how sharp the situation was and that we had to win. Maybe we should have seen it earlier. But now it’s too late, so just forget it and see what we did wrong and try to find a way forward.
Janne fights back
Janne Andersson disagrees with Kulusevski in his analysis of the tactic and that it came late.
– No, I do not. In the Nations League last year, we also tried to go in a slightly different way. Then we had a hell of a lot of damage which caused it to be completely overturned unfortunately. So I can’t agree with that, but you never know how things would have turned out, he says to SVT.

Missing the European Championship 2024 is a setback in the series of defeats that Janne Andersson has received in the last couple of years. Other examples are the demotion to the C division in the Nations League and Sweden’s failure to qualify for the WC in Qatar 2022.
A few days ago, the Swedish Football Association communicated that Janne Andersson’s time as national team captain is over in November if they miss the EC playoffs, which Sweden will most likely fail to do.
