The UN appeals to the parties in the upcoming elections in Liberia to avoid violence. The call comes after deadly violence in an election campaign filled with hateful outbursts threatened the presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.
– We are concerned about reports of election-related violence and the use of language that approaches hate crimes,” says the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Seif Magango.
The UN also notes that journalists are being attacked in Liberia.
– We call on the authorities to ensure that journalists can carry out their jobs, freely and safely, says Magango.
Two parties are leading in the election campaign. The elections in Liberia, previously marred by protracted civil wars from 1989 to 2003, will be held in a first round on October 10.
