Two brothers from Syria are charged in Germany with terrorist crimes. One of them is charged with planning an attack on a church, German prosecutors say.

The prosecutor’s office in Hamburg has brought charges against the brothers, 29 and 24 years old. The older brother is suspected of having planned an Islamist-motivated bombing attack against a church in Sweden with “the aim of killing and injuring a large number of people”.

According to a press release from the public prosecutor’s office, the man must have told an unidentified person with IS connections about his plans. The motive is said to have been the repeated Koran burnings in Sweden.

The younger brother is in turn charged with terrorist financing and for having prepared a “serious act of violence”.

The men were arrested in various raids in Hamburg and Kempten in the state of Bavaria this spring and have been in custody since then. The prosecutor in the case Liddy Oechtering has previously told TT that the brothers bought chemicals for bomb making on Ebay.
