Things have been slow for the Swedish men’s national football team in the last couple of years.
Someone who sympathizes with Blågult is Glenn Hysén.
– I felt damn sorry for them, says the former national team defender to Sportbibeln.
The Swedish men’s national team has not been known for its success in the last couple of years. Relegation in the Nations League, no World Cup in 2022, and most likely no European Championship in 2024 either. No, it hasn’t been easy being a national team player lately.
Hysén about Sweden
Someone who has been in the same position before is Glenn Hysén. The former centre-back played in the Swedish national team between 1981-1990. There were a total of 68 games and seven goals in the blue and yellow shirt.

In the last match, Sweden played against Austria in the European Championship qualifiers, then it was a 3-1 loss. Glenn Hysén saw the match and after all thought that Sweden played well.
– I felt damn sorry for them. In the first half, they were completely superior and had two or three cannon positions that they should have set. But unfortunately they didn’t and Austria turned it around in five minutes to make it 2-0. It’s so fucking typical. If they had only continued as they did in the first half, they would have won that match, he tells Sportbibeln.
“Not fun then”
After the loss against Austria, it was basically clear that Sweden will not play in the European Championship 2024 in Germany.
– It’s really boring when Sweden isn’t in a major championship. It will be a bit empty, says Hysén.

The Ballon d’Or winner from 1983 and 1988 can relate to the national team’s cancer.
– It’s sad what’s happening. I know what it’s like myself, from when things went to hell with the national team. It did it for us in the World Cup in 1990. At that time we were already qualified and played in the World Cup. But there were three losses and it’s not fun then. You get to know that you are alive then, says Hysén and laughs.
