Castlevania: Nocturne launched on Netflix a few days ago. The press is blown away by the series and gives it a perfect rating. In contrast, the user rating is below average at 54 percent. A look at the ratings shows why users have targeted the Netflix series.
How do the bad ratings come about? Many users give the series a maximum of one or even half a star rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of the ratings only consist of one sentence in which, for example, the story, the dubbing or the pacing of the series is described as garbage.
The first trailer looked like there would be plenty of action and excitement in the series.
As further research turns out, there is a completely different message behind the ratings. We have translated some of them into German so you can see why users rate the series so poorly (via rottentomatoes.com):
In the comments it is clear that many of the poor ratings are dissatisfied with the cast of the Netflix series. They denounce that Annette, Olrox and Drolta have dark skin and that there are homosexual characters in the series.
The trailer for Castlevania: Nocturne, on the other hand, doesn’t look like the story is being neglected:
Review bombing for Castlevania: Nocturne
Is the rating of 54% justified? There are also some points of criticism in the trade press. The series is good, but cannot keep up with the original Netflix series (via rottentomatoes.com).
Nevertheless, Castlevania: Nocturne currently has an astonishing 100% from 12 reviews. This means that all reviews so far are positive. The change to the French setting would be good for the series and the voice actors would do an excellent job.
The animations and fights are also first class. User Michael S. even praises Annette, who is much more interesting in the series than in the video game. But he thinks that the pacing is not always optimal.
What other cases were there? Castlevania: Nocturne is not alone with this problem. There was already a review bombing with The Last of Us Part II because homosexuality and LGBTQ played a role. Metacritic has therefore changed its guidelines to prevent such a mass of unjustified, negative reviews.
Through review bombing, users want to punish the series and films. There was also such review bombing against Overwatch 2 because players did not agree with the developers’ approach.
We also had to experience such a case in the Epic Games Store. Many games that were available exclusively or exclusively on the platform were poorly rated on other sites and shops. The Epic Games Store itself does not offer any function for rating games.
It probably won’t be the last Netflix series that has to go through such review bombing. If you don’t yet know which Netflix series you should watch next, the following list on MeinMMO could help you: 4 series and films on Netflix for fans of One Piece
