Star Wars book reveals set accident involving Chewbacca star
According to Slash Film it is in the background report book Star Wars – The Making of Return of the Jedi from 1983 that there was a fire incident on the set with the Chewbacca actor while filming Return of the Jedi. Mayhew is quoted in the book as saying:
So many things happened – like when I was set on fire. We made a blue screen. Carrie [Fisher] and I sat in the Falcon cockpit. They had placed small spotlights between my legs. Smoke came out next. Carrie turned around and said: ‘Oh, Peter, you’re burning.’
I was completely unaware of what was happening. It was a tight space, my head was on the floor and I thought, ‘Come on, let’s just keep going.’ If Carrie hadn’t said anything, there would have been a burned Wookiee.

As iconic as the fur costume is, it was always a challenge for Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew while filming Star Wars. The actor could see through the eyes of the mask, however He often barely noticed what was happening around him, or noticed it too late.
