A Sarnia man arrested two months ago after police said a suspect claimed the hatchets, knife, BB gun and ammo they were allegedly carrying were woodworking tools is back in custody on new charges.

David Grego, 25, was arrested again on Sept. 18 and charged with assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering a death threat, records show. Grego was kept in custody that Monday and ordered not to contact two complainants, Kayla Riley and Nic Rail.

Grego has made a handful of virtual court appearances since then from the Sarnia Jail, but has yet to apply for lease. All his outstanding charges, from three separate cases this year, were adjourned to next week as he continued to put together a bail plan with the help of duty counsel.
None of the charges have been tested in court.
Grego was first charged in January with assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death, and failing to comply with a release order by possession of a weapon, police have said. He was arrested again on July 24 on a bench warrant for allegedly failing to attend court and charged again with failing to comply with a release order by possession of a weapon, police said at the time.

Sarnia police took to the platform known at the time as Twitter and said a suspect was arrested that Monday morning with various weapons under the guise of tools.
“Male with a warrant for his arrest and a court-imposed weapons prohibition out for a Monday morning stroll with his ‘Woodworking Tools.’ Arrested and held for bail,” the Tweet said.
It included a photo of the alleged weapons displayed on the hood of a Sarnia police cruiser: two black handled hatchets, a large knife, a loaded Beretta replica BB handgun, and ammunition.
Chief Derek Davis took to the same social media platform to praise his officers.
“Excellent proactive work by @SarniaPolice patrol officers this morning,” he wrote at the time.
Grego was released a few hours later on a $500 bail plan without the alleged objects and a stern reminder that he’s barred from all types of weapons, but specifically BB guns and edged weapons.
