After the recruitment problems: Now the Skänninganstalten can be fully opened

Skänninge is a class 2 institution and will now be the country’s second largest prison with 372 places. Only Kumla is bigger with room for 529 inmates.

The plan was that the facility would have been fully operational by May, but the difficulties in finding new staff put a damper on things.

Strong growth

After an aggressive recruitment campaign at both local and national level, the Correctional Service found labor for Skänninge in Mjölby municipality.

At the beginning of the year, the institution had 230 employees. Today, the workforce has grown to around 450 permanent employees, hourly employees and temps. Now they are looking for another 100 new employees during the autumn.

– We have already managed to recruit 70, so it looks good, says Emil Ahlquist, Head of Correctional Services in Skänninge.

21 correctional officers out of 69 inmates

Sara Norling de Brun has been a newly employed correctional officer since the turn of the year and will start work in the house that is now the last to be put into operation. There, 21 correctional officers will work with 69 inmates who will in many cases share a cell.
