You should avoid these fish

Swedes eat one to two fish meals a week on average. What Swedes eat most are salmon, herring, cod and prawns. But both the way we catch the fish and the pattern we consume seafood lead to major problems for the animals, shows the WWF’s Fishing Guide, which is released today.

– We must remember that fish is not just food. It has an important role in that ecosystem. Globally, approximately 93 percent of the stocks are overfished or fished to the maximum, says Inger Melander.

To help consumers navigate among the seafood, WWF is releasing the Fishing Guide in 2023. There they use a traffic light system to easily clarify which fish are okay to eat and which ones to be a little more careful with.

– Just because it’s a green light, you can’t go “all crazy”. One eats in moderation.

They get approved

Among the green-listed fish we find, among other things, pollock, Swedish-farmed rainbow trout, American flounder and white bream and bream.

– The catfish can be in slightly different light depending on how and where it is fished. This particular green-listed one is fished in the Barents Sea, says Melander.

The Norwegian-farmed salmon, a big favorite in Swedish homes, is on yellow light. Approximately 70 percent of the fish eaten in Sweden is Norwegian salmon.

– The yellow light means: be careful. Eat only a couple of times a year. Maybe during holidays.

Other gold-listed fish are mackerel, char and catfish.

You should avoid those fish

Red-listed fish should be avoided completely, so that the stock has time to recover. The red-listed fish include the popular cod.

– There are cod lying on yellow, but this one is fished with a bottom trawl. You can see that it affects the size of the stock and there are problems with bycatch of sensitive species. You need to review how you conduct that fishing.

Streaming is also red-listed.

– The stromming has become smaller in size and leaner. The big streams are gone.

Other popular red-listed fish are yellowfin tuna and North Sea shrimp.
