Changan Automobile, one of the leading players in the Chinese automotive industry, recently introduced its new sub-brand Qiyuan and its first model A07, which is available in extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions. This strategic approach to offer both EREV and BEV versions reflects the trend among local electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to diversify their product offerings for increased sales potential.
The A07 was officially launched at a launch event that included five different versions of the model, three EREV and two BEV. EREV models are priced between RMB 155,900 (€19,870) and RMB 175,900 (€22,500), while BEV models start from RMB 166,900 (€21,300) and go up to RMB 176,900 (€22,600).
In terms of size, the Qiyuan A07 proudly positions itself as a mid-large-size sedan with a length of 4,905 mm, a width of 1,910 mm, a height of 1,480 mm and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. Interestingly, perhaps as a nod to the competition, BYD’s flagship sedan falls slightly below the Han EV in both size and price.
Under the hood, the A07 has a single rear-mounted engine with a small power difference between the EREV and BEV versions. The EREV engine provides 160 kW of peak power and 320 Nm of torque, complemented by a 1.5L range extender that produces up to 70 kW of power. Powered by a 28.39 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, the EREV version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and offers a commendable battery-only CLTC range of 200 km.
The A07 BEV, on the other hand, reaches speeds from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds with an engine with 190 kW maximum power and the same 320 Nm torque. Equipped with a 58.1 kWh battery pack, the BEV variant promises an impressive CLTC range of 515 km.
Changan’s venture into electric mobility extends beyond Qiyuan. The brand was officially launched on August 27 and plans to launch four models within the year, including the A05, A06, A07 and Q05. Qiyuan aims to have a total of 10 products worldwide by 2025, in addition to Changan’s existing line of new energy brands such as Deepal and Avatr.
Although questions have arisen regarding the A07’s specifications and Qiyuan’s aggressive entry into the market, Changan looks poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle world. While some skepticism is healthy, Qiyuan A07’s diversified approach and Changan’s overarching vision could lead the electric automotive market into intriguing new territory.
There is also a notable hint of synergy between Changan’s new energy brands, as the Qiyuan A07 EREV shares its range extender with the Deepal SL03, hinting at potential cross-brand collaborations in the future.
