The best job in the world
Claude Gisselbrecht, Metz (Moselle)
The teaching profession figures prominently among the professions in decline, unfortunately… Not so long ago, “teachers” and “teachers” were respected by their students, and their parents, most often, supported them and knew how to keep their distance from the institution… Nowadays, it sometimes happens that teachers overstep their rights, which disconcerts many teachers. From reform to reform, the school has too often been “disturbed”, lost its bearings and no longer knows very well what was expected of it. This does not really encourage the necessary overhaul of the system at all levels. “The most beautiful job in the world” nevertheless deserves this effort with, of course, the support of all citizens because we are all concerned! (“National education, the hidden side: ‘Our system is based on silence and what is left unsaid‘”, on Lexpress.fr).
The false “pot” of the municipalities
Guy Wentzel, Beblenheim (Haut-Rhin)
Former finance assistant and mayor of a town of around 1,000 inhabitants, I had the time to familiarize myself with public finances. You emphasize in your article that the municipalities’ cash flow is increasing, but this is not surprising. To realize their projects, municipalities in fact hoard cash until they once again have sufficient self-financing and debt capacity. We are in this phase. It is therefore not surprising that the debt only represents 4.3 years instead of 5.3. This is the purely mechanical result of the least recourse to credit. As for municipal resources, they are based on indexes that the State revalues by referring to the general inflation rate. This is lower than changes in the price of energy and construction, and therefore the inflation experienced. (“The municipalities’ kitty”L’Express of September 14.)
Defense of René Girard
Christian Lavialle, Toulouse (Haute-Garonne)
Your review of René Girard and the biography devoted to him give me the opportunity to congratulate you on the strong revitalization of L’Express. Seeing you devote an entire page to mocking “Idéfix” René Girard nevertheless surprised me. Your columnist does not seem to know that great discoveries are only based on an idea. A real, substantial idea. He could have criticized her, why not, rather than being mechanically ironic about details. By comparison, I find Christophe Donner’s sometimes very critical column remarkable. (“René Girard: the return of Dogmatix”L’Express of September 14.)
Noise of children, silence of parents
Jean Steinberg, Capbreton (Landes)
How can you not agree with Laurent Berbon when he writes that adults no longer support children, particularly in transport? However, it’s all a question of degree. Recently my wife and I traveled by TGV. Next to us was a “square” of four places where a young couple and a little girl of 2-3 years old sat. During the three-hour journey, the little girl never stopped whining and demanding this or that without the slightest reaction from the parents. I don’t know what was more painful: the incessant noise of the child or the attitude of the adults, who clearly do not have the same conception of education as me. (“Child-free spaces: grown-ups walk on their heads”L’Express of September 14.)
Europe facing the migration crisis
Robert Loupe, Chalmazel (Loire)
No, the migration crisis does not mark the failure of Giorgia Meloni, but that of Europe. The exponential arrival of migrants in Lampedusa demonstrates all the work that the Union has never done. Will the Old Continent emerge from its lethargy or will it prove the thesis of the German philosopher Oswald Spengler on the “decline of the West”? (“Migration crisis: the failure of Giorgia Meloni”L’Express of September 14.)
