Director Martin Scorsese turns 81 this year, but he’s still driven by his work ethic. Scorsese created legendary works such as Taxi Driver, Casino and The Wolf of Wall Street. There are no really bad films in his long resume.
Ahead of the release of his latest work, Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese looked back on his career in an interview with GQ. A popular thriller didn’t fare well: Shutter Island.
Martin Scorsese would have preferred to skip Shutter Island
In Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo investigate a remote psychiatric hospital in 1954 from which a patient is said to have escaped. The facility is located on an island, and when a storm breaks out, the investigators are also trapped on the island. The enigmatic mystery thriller still enjoys a high reputation among genre fans 13 years later.

shutter Island
Scorsese himself has nothing against his film, at least not directly. But in his very strict career review Today, Shutter Island is one of the works that he would rather have saved himself – especially because it is his self-imposed goal was not achieved with him. This is what Scorsese says in the interview:
[Einen Oscar für Departed zu gewinnen], encouraged me to make another film with Shutter Island. Turns out I probably should have moved on and done Silence.
However, Shutter Island was ignored at the 2011 Oscars – the thriller didn’t even receive a nomination. This very rarely happens to Scorsese, who is popular with the Academy. By the way, that’s almost impossible for his next film.
What is Martin Scorsese’s next film?
Killers of the Flower Moon will be released on October 19, 2023 in German cinemas. It concerns the investigations by the FBI’s predecessor agency into the brutal murder of numerous members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma in 1920. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead role again.
