We are used to high prices at the airports, but it was when SEB economist Johan Javeus published a post on platform X last weekend that the discussion really took off. He had to pay SEK 422 for a shrimp sandwich and a glass of beer.
Price caps are introduced at the airports
After the discussions, Swedavia now chooses to introduce price caps at its airports. Within just over a month, the price will only be 10 percent higher than the corresponding products in town. A decision criticized by restaurateur Pontus Frithiof
– I think a price ceiling is perhaps not the best solution, says Pontus Frithiof in Efter fem.
He also believes that the problem is not only the price, but that you need to look at what you get, the quality of what you pay for.
More expensive to run a restaurant at an airport
The fact that the price is higher than outside airports is justified by Swedavia with the fact that there are greater logistical challenges to operating at an airport. Products must be X-rayed when they pass the security check and the staff who will work must also undergo special security training. There Pontus Frithiof agrees:
– Many costs are significantly higher when you run a restaurant at an airport, says Pontus Frithiof and points out that you often have to pay wages to your staff while the security check is in progress.
In total, Swedavia owns ten airports in Sweden, where the price ceiling is now to be introduced.
