This year, two projects at Netflix are tackling the horrors of the opioid crisis. While the series Painkiller sheds light on the Purdue drug empire, Pain Hustlers follows the questionable behavior of pharmaceutical representatives with Emily Blunt and Chris Evans.
However, you can stream the most disturbing and at the same time best series about the opioid horror, which has been costing lives in the USA for 30 years, on Disney+. With a Average rating from the Moviepilot community of 8.2 Dopesick is one of the best series of recent years. And you shouldn’t miss it.
Dopesick is a grueling series highlight with an incredible story
The plot of Dopesick takes you back to the 1990s and sheds light on the origins of one of the greatest catastrophes of our time. When the pharmaceutical company Purdue brings the painkiller OxyContin onto the market, it is touted as a miracle cure. An aggressive advertising campaign spreads the narcotic across the country as a salvation for all people in pain.

Richard Sackler and his followers try to downplay the fact that many people are developing a strong addiction to OxyContin. By the time the drug enforcement agency DEA begins investigating Purdue, it is already too late. The nationwide addiction to painkillers can no longer be stopped.
One of the best series of 2021: That’s why Dopesick is worth it on Disney+
There is a great danger that such true crime series get lost in dry treatises of facts. Not so with Dopesick. Series creator Danny Strong tells us the incredible story surrounding OxyContin moving and heartbreaking individual fates witness different aspects of the opioid crisis.
A family doctor is confronted with his own complicity in the suffering of his patients, a young miner slips into dependence and a pharmaceutical representative has to question his own morals as he advances in his career. Their stories are all fantastic and at the same time Stirring staged and acted.
A major strength of Dopesick is the top-class cast including Batman star Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Rosario Dawson, who is currently shining in the Star Wars series Ahsoka.
