Extremely expensive fantasy flop that destroyed a 6 film universe

In the 2010s, every studio in Hollywood wanted a major film universe Model of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether with or without superheroes. Universal, for example, tried to bring its monsters together in an epic narrative. But the first film, The Mummy with Tom Cruise, failed.

Warner Bros. has a similar story to tell. With King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, the Arthurian legend should be presented in the guise of a… modern fantasy blockbusters awaken to new life. Six films were planned that would be dedicated to the key figures in the legend. But after part 1 it was over.

Now on Amazon Prime: The mega fantasy flop King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

In King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam takes on the role of the titular hero magical sword Excalibur pulls out of the stone and thus becomes an immortal legend. Hardly anyone wanted to see this version of the story directed by Aladdin director Guy Ritchie in the cinema.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword consumed a gigantic budget of $175 million in production. The marketing costs are not yet included. However, the film was able to do so worldwide just under $150 million play in. A massive flop that no one could sugarcoat.

Warner immediately rowed back and put the six-film plan on hold. Rarely has a Hollywood “franchise” come and gone as quickly as King Arthur. Even the aforementioned launch of Universal’s Dark Universe did better in terms of numbers than that failed fantasy epic.
