A major upgrade to the lighting at the Steve Brown Sports Complex was celebrated this week by representatives of city council, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the MPP’s office.
The energy-efficient lighting means the entire complex can be used during evenings and dark afternoons, which are also the hours of highest demand.
Before the upgrades, visibility during poor light was limited to the blue and red ball diamonds, the all-weather track and soccer fields.
The upgrades were paid for through a Trillium Community Building Fund capital grant of $500,000 and should extend the lifespan of the complex.
“The Steve Brown Sports Complex is an integral part of the southwest part of the Brantford community,” said MPP Will Bouma in a statement, “and will continue to be for decades to come. Well done.”
Mayor Kevin Davis said the city is grateful to the Trillium Foundation for the much-needed upgrade.
“With energy-efficient technology at the core, we’re not only enhancing functionality, safety and the overall visitor experience, but also making a conscious choice for a greener and most cost-effective solution to extend the lifespan of this beloved facility,” Davis said in a statement.
The Steve Brown Sports Complex, on Edge Street, is the largest multi-use outdoor sports facility in the southwest end of the city used by more than 30,000 each year.
It has baseball diamonds, soccer fields and track facilities, along with free tennis and pickle ball courts for the public.
