That’s why iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 introduce a useful new feature called Screen Distance, which makes it easier to get into the habit of using your iPhone and iPad at a healthy distance. This feature reduces the risk of myopia for children and helps reduce or prevent eye strain for everyone.

Apple explains how this feature works:

“Screen Distance works by measuring the distance between the screen and your eyes. The camera does not capture images or video, and the data collected remains on the device and is not shared with Apple.”

How to use iPhone Screen Distance in iOS 17?

  1. On your iPhone or iPad with Face ID running iOS 17 Settings open the app
  2. Screen TimeSelect , now look below and Screen DistanceTap
  3. Now Continueto, then Open Screen Distancetap

After tapping on the “Open Screen Distance” option, everything is ready.

The middle and right screenshot below shows what your iPhone or iPad looks like when it detects that you’re holding your device too close.

After moving the device away from your face, tap “Continue” to exit the Screen Distance pop-up.

In my time with Screen Distance so far, I’ve noticed that I tend to use my iPhone too close in the evenings. And this feature really helped me change this habit.

AppleIt doesn’t give a very long time to hold the iPhone and iPad less than 30 centimeters away, but I found the Screen Shield to pop up in about five minutes. In particular, you cannot make the warning disappear by pointing your iPhone away from your face.
