With The Creator, a very special science fiction film will be released in cinemas in a few days. The reason? We are dealing with an original story. No sequel, no remake. Director and screenwriter Gareth Edwards has one completely new story conceived in an exciting vision of the future.
In the world of The Creator, a massive war rages between humans and machines. Artificial intelligences have evolved and sometimes can no longer be distinguished from real people. The situation is tense – and then a child android with incredible powers suddenly appears.
The Creator tells an original sci-fi story heavily influenced by Steven Spielberg
Ex-soldier Joshua (John David Washington) makes it his mission to protect the child, Alfie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), from powerful parties who want to use him as a weapon. This creates one emotional story. Edwards was primarily inspired by a film when writing: ET – The Extra-Terrestrial.

Steven Spielberg’s science fiction masterpiece from 1982 also tells of an unlikely relationship that occurs between one People (child) and a sci-fi character arises. In this case, however, it is not an android, but an alien. At The Creator’s global press conference, Edwards explained why ET is such a source of inspiration for him.
The film that probably left the biggest impression on me as a child was Steven Spielberg’s ET. Back then all I wanted to see was an alien, a spaceship and BMX bikes. But then the film got me so emotionally drainedthat I had to cry.

That’s the goal with every film you make. You don’t say that out loud because then you can only fail. But if you can’t make people cry, you are not exploiting the power of cinema. That’s always the secret goal when you write a film: you want it to touch people. Now the audience has to decide whether I made it or not.
ET isn’t the only film that inspired Edwards in his work on The Creator. In the past he has also cited sci-fi films such as Blade Runner and Akira as inspiration. There are also road movies à la Paper Moon, The Hit and Rain Man, in which we see one of each unequal team consequences. Also important: the war film Apocalypse Now and the powerful documentary Baraka.

The theatrical release of The Creator is just around the corner. Starting Thursday next week, so from that September 28, 2023, the sci-fi adventure conquers the big screen. To be on the safe side, pack your tissues. Edwards has already proven with the Rogue One finale that he can direct a very emotional sci-fi blockbuster.
