Sci-fi and horror fans will get their money’s worth tonight with the trash classic Mutant – The Horror in Space (1982), which was shown at SchleFaZ and is streaming for free and without a subscription on Amazon Freevee. One of the greats of the genre was indirectly involved in the film: Avatar – Awakening to Pandora director James Cameron.
That’s what the trashy sci-fi gem from Roger Corman is all about
The science fiction film is one obvious copy of Ridley Scott’s Alien – The eerie creature from a strange world, which had caused a sensation in the cinema three years earlier. Producer legend Roger Corman commissioned several of them. In this version, a team of scientists on the planet Xarbia develops a new life form called Subject 20 to do good for the world. However, the creature has its own deadly will and is targeting its creators.

Mutant – The horror in space
Some of the film’s sets were designed by one former truck driver and school janitor named James Cameron designed and reused for other Corman projects. After seeing Star Wars, the Canadian decided to pursue a career in film and joined Roger Corman Studios. Two years after Mutant (aka Forbidden World) Terminator came to the cinema and another two years later Cameron’s own, “real” alien film Aliens – The Return.
With Mutant – The Horror in Space you can expect a critically derided sci-fi horror film with a lot of naked skin, handmade effects (and production design) and unintentionally funny interludes.
