Several days of 45 degree heat can become a reality in London “in the foreseeable future”. This is what the British capital’s mayor Sadiq Khan says, and calls the conclusions of a climate report concerning London “incredibly worrying”.
Such an extreme heat wave could endanger basic functions in the city.
– This means that the subway would not be effective, some homes would be too hot during the day and this also applies to care homes and schools, says Khan to The Guardian.
– This means that we have to adapt to those temperatures now.
The mayor says he has ensured that more shade trees are planted and that air conditioning is installed on buses. But more government support is required for cities to be able to adapt to the effects of climate change, he emphasizes.
London has so far never had temperatures above around 40 degrees.
