The mining plans in Kallak/Gállok outside Jokkmokk have been criticized by researchers, Sami villages, the environmental movement, the county government and the UN because it threatens the reindeer herding, the nature in the area and the world heritage Laponia, and during the week the case will go before the Supreme Administrative Court.
“Welcomes the decision”
Last week, Unesco’s World Heritage Committee also decided on a so-called “Reactive Monitoring Mission” regarding the Laponia World Heritage Site.
This involves special monitoring and site visits by Unesco and its expert advisory bodies, and the aim is for the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be able to assist with appropriate solutions so that the values are maintained.
– We welcome the World Heritage Committee’s decision and look forward to a constructive dialogue and cooperation with Unesco and other actors in the task of inviting a Reactive Monitoring Mission, says Susanne Thedéen, chief antiquarian at the National Antiquities Authority.
