Risk of cholera outbreak in Libya after the floods

Almost a week ago, the city of Darnah in Libya was hit by huge floods after storm Daniel. Dams burst and large parts of the city ended up under water.

More than 11,000 people have died and around 10,000 more are missing.

– The city smells like death, says an aid worker to the AP news agency.

Now the UN and several aid organizations are going out and warning of a possible cholera outbreak, reports Sky News.

At least 30,000 homeless

The UN is again flagging that the country is in urgent need of help in the form of both food and rescue equipment.

– The priority is to give people a roof over their heads, help with food and to provide medical care due to the concern about cholera, says UN representative Martin Griffiths.

At least 30,000 people have been left homeless as a result of the floods, reports the Red Crescent, which belongs to the Red Cross.

At the same time, anger is growing against the local authorities who ignored the warnings about the status of the dams that burst.
