A joint project by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez is increasingly proving to be a goldmine for successful genre films. On Friday Machete will be on TV, which is based on a fake trailer – and he’s not alone.
What is the completely bizarre machete about?
Former cop Machete (Danny Trejo) is tasked with assassinating Senator McLaughlin (Robert De Niro), who is garnering votes with a vicious campaign against illegal immigrants. Before Machete can hunt down the demagogue, he is betrayed and badly beaten by his employers.
However, the enemies have taken on the wrong man: With the help of his shotgun-wielding brother (Cheech Marin), who has now become a clergyman, and a group of illegal immigrants, Machete takes bloody revenge on McLaughlin and his henchmen.
Without Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, Machete wouldn’t exist
In 2007, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino released their joint homage to the B-movie of the ’60s and ’70s: Grindhouse. Tarantino made Death Proof and Rodriguez Planet Terror. As planned, the two films were shown one after the other in some cinemas. The Grindhouse program also included some fake trailers that were shot by renowned genre directors such as Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Edgar Wright.

Three of these trailers have now become real films and Machete was the first in 2010. This was followed by Hobo with a Shotgun in 2011. This year we continue with that Holiday slasher Thanksgiving, which Eli Roth turned into a feature-length film. In fact, Machete was so popular that it received a sequel, Machete Kills in 2013. A third installment is available with Machete Kills Again… In Space! at least announced.
When and where is Machete on TV?
ProSieben shows Machete on the night of Friday to Saturday at 1:25 a.m. Unfortunately there won’t be a repeat, but you can rent Machete from Amazon, among other places.
