Millie Bobby Brown is one of the rising actresses in Hollywood. Since her casting in Stranger Things she has been one of the most sought-after young stars. Most recently, she spearheaded the Enola Holmes films on Netflix and guest-starred in the MonsterVerse while Godzilla, King Kong and Co. bashed their heads in.
However, Brown’s latest project has nothing to do with films and series. Instead she published her first book: Nineteen Steps. The novel, inspired by her own family history, appeared in stores a few days ago. Her name is written in large letters on the cover – and that causes criticism.
Nineteen Steps: Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown’s debut novel under review
Brown is not the sole author of the book. As the Guardian reports, she worked with the British writer on Nineteen Steps Kathleen McGurl worked together as a ghostwriter. Now there is a hail of criticism, particularly directed at the publisher Waterstones, who omitted McGurl’s name from the cover.
That’s awful. You should be ashamed of yourself. Celebrity novels written by ghostwriters have the Children’s literature ruined and now they’re doing the same with adult literature.

Brown herself has the fact that she wrote Nineteen Steps in collaboration with McGurl wrote, never kept secret. She recently shared a picture of herself and McGurl on Instagram with the words:
A huge thank you to my collaborator tour [Kathleen McGurl] – I couldn’t have done it without her.

Under her Instagram post, Brown also receives a lot of support. Even big names are expressing their support. Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul writes: “Great! So proud of you. That’s a big deal. Congratulations!”
The story of Nineteen Steps takes place against the backdrop of Bethnal Green disasters in London. Today’s subway station was used as an air raid shelter during World War II. On March 3, 1943, there was a mass panic in which 173 people died. Nineteen Steps was primarily inspired by Brown’s grandmother’s experiences at the time.
