Eleven Mexican police officers have been convicted of murdering 17 migrants near the US border, according to the country’s attorney general’s office.

The murders took place on January 21, 2021 in the community of Santa Anita in the state of Tamaulipas. The victims were shot to death before the bodies were burned, according to prosecutors.

Initially, twelve police officers were charged with murder, but one of them cooperated during the investigation and is therefore charged instead with having abused his power in the service.

The burned bodies were found in a truck in the municipality of Camargo, an area characterized by conflicts between drug cartels near the border with the US state of Texas.

A total of 19 bodies were found, including the remains of two Mexicans who, according to the authorities, were human traffickers who would take the migrants to the border.
