The western region of Darfur – home to a quarter of Sudan’s population – has seen some of the worst fighting in the five-month war between the country’s army and the RSF paramilitary group.
According to health workers, Wednesday’s deadly airstrikes hit two markets and a number of Nyala neighborhoods.
The attack came a day after 17 civilians were reported dead in the capital Khartoum’s sister city of Omdurman. Witnesses believe that it was RSF that carried out the attack.
There are also reports that at least 51 people were killed and dozens were injured during airstrikes on southern Khartoum on Sunday, according to UN human rights chief Volker Turk.
There is no sign that the violence will abate in the near future, even as the humanitarian needs of millions increase. The war has forced more than five million people to flee, including one million who have fled across national borders, according to UN reports.
