The sleep researcher sees the viral trend: “Can become dangerous”

In the past year, more and more people have adopted a new trend from social media where you tape your mouth before bedtime.

The health benefits are said to be many, including improved sleep quality.

– It is good to breathe through the nose. It has a calming effect and improves oxygen uptake, says Christian Benedict.

The hashtag #mouthtape currently has 115.3 million views on Tiktok. And recently, the Norwegian soccer player Erling Haaland told us that he is one of those people who tapes his mouth every night – and that it has led to better sleep.

“You have to be careful”

But that doesn’t have to mean that it works for everyone, says Benedict.

– You have to be careful. What suits me does not necessarily suit everyone else.

Furthermore, the sleep researcher believes that there are those who take it way too far.

– There are those who use real tape to ensure that they cannot breathe through their mouths. And if you get a stuffy nose, it can be really dangerous, because then you can neither breathe through your mouth nor your nose, says Benedict.
