Netflix has achieved the impossible with One Piece: a successful live-action adaptation of an extremely popular anime or manga. For German fans who have been following the One Piece anime for over 20 years, the Netflix series has created a particularly nostalgic highlight with the return of the well-known German voice actors.
Would the One Piece film adaptation also work if the Straw Hats Luffy, Nami, Zorro, Sanji and Usopp had had completely new German voices? This almost happened. Because the most important person behind the German One Piece version almost canceled the project.
Netflix’s One Piece almost lost the most important German anime voice
The voice actor is Daniel Hose Part of One Piece for over 20 years. He lent his voice to Monkey D. Luffy in over 1000 episodes of the anime series as well as the numerous anime films. For fans who grew up with the German dub, there is no other Luffy. The fact that he can also be heard in the Netflix adaptation as the voice of Iñaki Godoy’s young pirate is a gift.
We were able to welcome Daniel “Luffy” Hülse as a guest on the Moviepilot podcast Stramgegeführtem. In conversation about the Netflix adaptation, he reveals why he took the role for the live-action series of One Piece already canceled by mistake had.

Daniel Hose was one of the first people behind the German anime version who was contacted to dub the Netflix adaptation. Not only is he the speaker, but he is also responsible for the selection of German voices as a dialogue director. However, due to a misunderstanding, he initially canceled the One Piece return. Because: Nobody wanted to tell him what he was supposed to be working for.
‘Yes, what is it?’ Then I was told an alias. Because a lot of things go under code names until they are officially launched. But I couldn’t do anything with the code name. It also had nothing to do with One Piece. And then I canceled: ‘Sorry, I really don’t have the time for anything else this year. I’m fully booked.’
However, the dubbing studio responsible was able to avert the big One Piece disaster at the last moment and solved the mystery surrounding the mysterious Netflix project. His reaction: “For God’s sake. Yes, of course. That changes everything.“
Luckily, Daniel Hose still found room in his busy schedule to direct the dubbing work. In collaboration with Netflix and his co-director Hubertus von Lerchenfeld, the voice actor for Sanji (played by Taz Skylar), he brought together the vocal Straw Hat crew from the anime for the live-action series.
Despite Daniel Hosen’s involvement in the German dubbed version of the Netflix series, the casting of the anime voices in the live-action roles was not guaranteed from the start.
