It is the incredible epilogue to a soap opera that has kept the Netherlands in suspense for three years. A private detective nicknamed “the Indiana Jones of the art world” managed to recover a Van Gogh painting stolen three years ago from a Batavian museum in the middle of Covid confinement. The painting represents Van Gogh’s hometown in 1884, a very classic oil painting, before the explosion of Vincent van Gogh’s chromatic palette. A painting estimated between 1 and 6 million euros, which was returned in an Ikea bag protected by a pillow.
