A dangerous challenge is spreading on social media and has now come to a tragic end for the first time. A 14-year-old American died after taking part in the “One Chip Challenge”. But what is actually behind this risky challenge?
What does the challenge entail? The “One Chip Challenge” is a trend on TikTok that involves eating a single spicy chip from a coffin-shaped box and filming yourself doing it. But this chip is anything but ordinary.
It is refined with the hottest chili in the world, the “Carolina Reaper Chili”. The spiciness is measured on the Scoville scale. The “Carolina Reaper Chili can reach a Scoville value of up to 2.1 million. For comparison: a normal Tabasco sauce has a Scoville value between 2500 and 5000.
What are the dangers? Consuming spicy food can pose serious health risks. The most common consequences include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.
In addition, eating very spicy food can cause breathing problems, dizziness, and increased heart rate. In some cases, it can even cause serious health complications such as stomach or intestinal bleeding. The “One Chip Challenge” therefore poses a significant health risk.
What happened to the teenager? In the USA, this dangerous trend has now claimed a shocking death. A 14-year-old teenager who took part in the “One Chip Challenge” has tragically died.
The exact circumstances are not yet public, but it is suspected that the chip’s extreme sharpness caused serious health problems.
There have also been medical emergencies in connection with the challenge in Germany. An incident recently occurred in Euskirchen in which fifth graders at a comprehensive school ate the spicy tortilla chip and then had to be taken to the hospital with shortness of breath.
The challenge has been known on Twitch for a long time
Where does the challenge come from? The challenge has been known for a long time not only on platforms like TikTok, but also in the streamer scene on Twitch. Some well-known streamers such as LetsHugo, the PietSmiets, EliasN97 and numerous others have already carried out this challenge in their streams. However, this usually had a milder outcome, although tears and vomiting were not uncommon.
MontanaBlack wanted to turn the tables. At this year’s gamescom he let his viewers take part in a sharpness contest. This was about who could endure the extremely spicy foods for the longest without giving up or vomiting.
Unfortunately, this competition ended in a tragic incident when a contestant in the challenge had to be taken to the hospital.
