“It will be more Pay2Win, but it has to be done”

Pearl Abyss, the developers of Black Desert, want to combat inflation in MMORPGs. The prices for Cron stones will be adjusted for this purpose. A YouTuber took a closer look at the numbers and found: This makes costumes for real money more lucrative.

What exactly is changing? The developers explain that Black Desert is struggling with severe inflation. The average silver received per player per day in 2023 is 5.06 times higher in North America and 6 times higher in Europe than in 2019.

At the same time, there were only small price adjustments by retailers in 2019 and most recently one for costumes in May 2022. That should change now:

  • The price of Cron Stones for NPCs is increased from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 silver – i.e. by 50%.
  • At the same time, Cron stones received for premium sets will be increased, as will the prices for selling these costumes in-game.
  • The YouTuber Pansy took a closer look at the numbers. As a result of the changes, the prices per Cron stone for costumes will increase from 1.35 million to 1.64 million silver. So there is an increase, but not nearly as strong as at the dealer.

When will this change appear? The release is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th.

The latest expansion for BDO, Land of the Morning Light, was only released in May of this year, and you can watch the trailer for it here:

What does the YouTuber say about the changes? In his video, Pansy explains that he can fundamentally understand the decision to adjust the price. The inflation in Black Desert is noticeable and the increase in dealer prices is correct.

He is more critical of the adjustments to the costumes because it is more towards Pay2Win.

It used to be cheaper to buy costumes for real money and then destroy them to get Cron stones. But the gap between 1.35 and 2 million silver was small. Now this is at 1.64 and 3 million, which is more noticeable.

However, in the video he says that Pearl Abyss needs to make money and that’s probably why they decided to take this step:

It’s a thing that had to be done. As much as I don’t like Pay2Win or any other idea like that, the game has to make money, otherwise there won’t be a game anymore. It is like it is. I don’t think it’s a drastic or game-breaking change.

What’s the deal with the Cron stones anyway? Cron stones prevent an item from losing levels or being destroyed when it is upgraded. The rarer the equipment and the higher the level, the more Cron Stones you need. Since the chances of an upgrade are getting smaller and smaller, you need several thousand or even ten thousand of them.

The easiest way to win Cron Stones is to buy costumes for real money and recycle them. Since you can also buy and sell the costumes directly in-game in the marketplace, others can also spend the real money and earn silver – the in-game currency.

Otherwise, there are the blacksmith NPCs who sell crown stones directly for silver, but at significantly higher prices.

Another option is to earn Cron Stones via the codes that are activated regularly: Black Desert Codes: All current coupons for BDO in September 2023.

What do you think about the change? Is it really that small or are you bothered by the larger advantage for real money users?
