The idea of the self-perceived gender has taken place in the culture war between different activist phalanxes. Now it is also making its way into Swedish legislation.
– This law aims to legally recognize gender identity, says Ulrika Westerlund, Member of Parliament for the Green Party and former confederation chairman for RFSL, who has long fought for transgender rights.
The government promised that in the spring of 2023 a bill would be presented to the Riksdag on a new gender identity law, which is therefore about making it easier to change the legal gender in the population register.
KD resists
But friction between the governing parties has led to delays in the process. According to information to SVT, a majority in the Christian Democrats’ parliamentary group does not want the proposal to be put forward, which has resulted in irritation within the Liberals.
The new law would mean that anyone should be able to change their legal gender without requiring a diagnosis from trans care.
– The reasonable thing is that care spends time and resources on what it needs to spend time and resources on. Not on something completely different like this change of legal gender, says Ulrika Westerlund.
