Before Disney and Johnny Depp revived the dead pirate film genre with Pirates of the Caribbean in the early 2000s, Geena Davis played a privateer in The Pirate Bride in the mid-90s, which also had an action-packed and entertaining adventure, but was a legendary flop in the cinema.
You can now watch the partly unfairly criticized film, which is better than its reputation, restored in 4K with release on September 8th Get the new Blu-ray version from Amazon *. The new version here has a resolution of Full HD despite the 4K master, while a full UHD version is currently not available on Amazon due to exclusivity.
That’s what The Pirate Bride is all about
The greatest pirate treasure of all time is said to be found on the hidden island of Cutthroat Island and the treasure map there was once divided between three brothers. One of them is the infamous pirate king Black Harry (Harris Yulin), who confided his secret to his daughter Morgan (Geena Davis) shortly before her death.
Together with her crew and the thief William Shaw (Matthew Modine), she sets out to find the other parts of the treasure map, but her uncle Dawg Brown (Frank Langella) is also after the treasure, as are a lot of brutal pirates.
Is The Pirate Bride worth it?
With a budget of around $100 million, The Pirate Bride only took in around $10 million at the box office and made the pirate genre unattractive to major studios for years. At least until Pirates of the Caribbean came along and became a box office hit, although the Johnny Depp blockbuster is not that dissimilar to The Pirate Bride even apart from the setting.
The expensive production costs can be seen in the visually very complex presentation of costumes, ships, stunts and explosions, apart from the often flat dialogues. The Moviepilot community gave it an average of 5.6 out of 10. For fans of pirate films and those who can’t get enough of Pirates of the Caribbean, Geena Davis’ pirate adventure should be worth it either way, especially in the improved new version.
