Anime cannot be translated one-to-one into live-action film format. Who really wants to see a single fight told over three hours? For these and other reasons, Netflix couldn’t possibly save every great story from the anime template into the live-action adaptation One Piece. Fans still mourn a fan favorite who was completely left out for all but three measly seconds: It’s about Chouchou, the dog.
One Piece fans complain about Netflix expulsion: 3 seconds of Chouchou are not enough
In the manga and anime, the Straw Hat Pirates meet Chouchou (also: Shushu) when they want to free the village of Orange Town from Buggy (in the adaptation: Jeff Ward) and his gang. The dog guards his owner’s pet food store, even though he has been deceased for years. Even when the villains injured him, he steadfastly stood guard and after an intense fight becomes friends with Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and co.
This is what Chouchou looks like in the anime and Netflix series:

So much for the template. The highly emotional story about the heartbreakingly loyal dog was unfortunately reduced to three seconds in the adaptation. The Orange Town story on Netflix is almost entirely told in a circus tent only shows a small dog after the final fight, who runs through the picture for a brief moment. The scene takes place in episode 2, around minute 44:45. Many fans are disappointed, as GamePro reports.
“I love the adaptation, but I’ll never forgive the omitted Chouchou story“, it says something like, or “Chouchou, you deserve better“.”They kicked you out, but we know you’re a giant, Chouchou” writes a third fan.

Some voices are more merciful. “The fact that Chouchou is there means everything to me, even if his story isn’t told“, explains a community member on X. In fact, the manga template also returns to the loyal dog later. So Netflix has a chance to get everyone on board.
