The Swedish Tennis Association’s move against doping suspended Mikael Ymer – now admits: “Very positive”

Mikael Ymer was suspended from all tennis – and ended his career.
But the Swedish Tennis Association has not given up.
– He has done a lot of positive things, General Secretary Christer Sjöö.

It was during the summer that the news hit like a bomb: Mikael Ymer, Sweden’s highest-ranked tennis player, is banned from all tennis for 18 months after missing his stay reporting. It was during 2021 that Ymer did not report his whereabouts correctly on three occasions, which is punishable.

Completed career

Ymer argued that the last of the three points was wrongly issued, and that he was actually fully acquitted by an independent jury. Despite that, the International Tennis Federation suspended him, and in retrospect it has emerged that Mikael Ymer lied in his report, when he said that his little brother suddenly fell ill, which meant that he was in a different place than he reported.

The truth was, however, that Ymer’s little brother, on that occasion, was not even in Sweden, but in Finland to play tennis. After the announcement of the suspension, Ymer has chosen to end his career as a tennis player completely. Ymer had a successful summer behind him, with success at Wimbledon, and where he approached a top 50 place in the world. Ymer has also been extremely important in Sweden’s Davis Cup success last year.

The union’s move

And despite the fact that Ymer is suspended, and despite the fact that he has chosen to end his career, the association does not seem to have given up hope. Secretary General Christer Sjöö now reveals to SVT that they still hope to get him back.

– We will have ongoing contact with Mikael, who has done a lot of positive things for Swedish tennis, not least in the Davis Cup, says Sjöö to the site.

Otherwise, Sweden’s third best-ranked player, Dragos Madaras, has also found himself in trouble. He is being investigated by the ITIA, tennis’ integrity unit – and is out of the Davis Cup for “personal reasons”.

– We have contact with players and everything like this is confidential. In Madara’s case, he has informed our captain that he is not with us for personal reasons and then it is up to him if he wants to tell, says Sjöö.
