When it comes to Francis Ford Coppola’s gripping war epic, you have to get the really big superlatives: Apocalypse Now not only won 2 Oscars (with 8 nominations), but was included in the National Film Registry of the United States of America in 2000. Only exceptional films that are considered particularly worthy of preservation are selected there.

The Collector’s Edition contains the original theatrical version from 1979 and the two extended editions “The Final Cut”, with a massive running time of 183 minutes, and “Redux”. Intense, haunting and visionary: Apocalypse Now is a two and a half hour ride through hell

This doesn’t just mean the hell of the Vietnam War, as the plot of Apocalypse Now could just as easily take place in almost any other major military conflict. And yet the chosen setting brings with it its own horror: Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is assigned to take a patrol boat to Cambodia, where Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has become a psychopath as a result of the war, is a brutal guerrilla -Wages war against the communist army of Vietnam. In his personal campaign he is worshiped almost like a god by his soldiers.

Willard and his small crew meet Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), who has been driven insane by the brutal war and who initially reluctantly helps them, but later becomes even more enthusiastic. The attack begins and we experience the iconic helicopter flight, accompanied by the sounds of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie.

Apocalypse Now: Various versions and bonus material

The following versions of Apocalypse Now are included:

  • Theatrical version from 1979
  • Apocalypse Now Redux from 2001. A version with 49 minutes of additional scenes that were deleted from the original
  • Coppola’s preferred version and thus the film in perhaps its best form: Apocalypse Now Final Cut from 2019: In this version, 20 minutes of the additional scenes from Redux were deleted again.
