AMD has released two new graphics cards, the RX 7700 XT and the RX 7800 XT, in order to be able to stand up to Nvidia in the mid-range. We will explain to you whether this is successful in our article on MeinMMO.
The essentials in brief:
With the RX 7700 XT and the 7800 XT, AMD has brought two new graphics cards onto the market. Both GPUs are aimed at gamers who don’t want to spend more than 600 euros on a mid-range model.
Nvidia also offers two graphics cards in the same range: the RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4070. MeinMMO explains what the two graphics cards offer and which one might be worthwhile for which player.
RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT – The facts at a glance
Who is the graphics card aimed at? AMD is presenting the two graphics cards at gamescom 2023 and is aimed at gamers who are looking for a graphics card for WQHD. The RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4070 were indirectly mentioned as direct competitors. Above the two GPUs are the Radeon RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 XTX.
This is what the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT offer: With the two graphics cards, AMD wants to offer enough performance for WQHD (1440p) or high FPS in Full HD (1080p). With FSR, AMD also provides an alternative to Nvidia’s DLSS. The price is slightly below the competition.
With the two graphics cards, AMD also wants to close the big gap between the RX 7600 and RX 7900 XT(X). No further graphics cards are officially planned for the 7000 series.
The most important data at a glance:
This is what the testers say about the RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT
In the following section we present excerpts from the independent tests. Below we will introduce you to the advantages and disadvantages of the two new graphics cards.
What do the testers praise? With the RX 7700 XT and the RX 7800 XT you get two very good graphics cards that offer you a lot of performance for your money. With the large video memory (12 GB for the RX 7700 XT and 16 GB for the 7800 XT), the graphics cards are future-proof and are therefore sometimes ahead of Nvidia’s graphics cards.
AMD collects important plus points in comparison with Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070, especially when it comes to price-performance.
What do the testers criticize? AMD’s RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT are still significantly behind Nvidia’s graphics cards in terms of ray tracing performance. Some also criticize that the gap between the new 7000 cards is significantly smaller than the jump in the last generation. But that was no different with Nvidia’s 4000 series graphics cards.
The colleagues at Computerbase also criticize that the name of the RX 7800 XT is misleading. Because the RX 7800 XT is more at the level of the RX 6800 and not the XT variant. This is particularly disappointing for buyers who expect a significant jump in performance when purchasing.
How good is the RX 7700 XT in Full HD, WQHD and 4K?
In the tests, the RX 7700 XT is always well ahead of the competing RX 4060 Ti. In some cases it is 20% more powerful than Nvidia’s graphics card. The new GPU is also around 30% ahead of the older RX 6700 XT.
Thanks to the 12 GB of video memory, the performance of the RX 7700 XT is sufficient for games in both Full HD and WQHD with high to maximum graphics details. The RX 7700 XT can even handle ray tracing. However, the performance of the RX 7700 XT is no longer sufficient for 4K.
How good is the RX 7800 XT in Full HD, WQHD and 4K?
The 7800 XT offers excellent performance in games in Full HD and WQHD. You can also play games in 4K, but then you have to reduce the details. The graphics card also copes well with ray tracing. However, the RX 7800 XT is not a real 4K graphics card.
At the latest in 4K resolution with ray tracing activated, the RX 7800 XT is too slow. Demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 no longer achieve a stable 60 FPS.
Who is the RX 7700 XT and the RX 7800 XT worth it for?
Basically, you should be aware that the new graphics cards do not offer much more performance than the old generation. In some cases the lead is only a few percentage points and with slightly improved efficiency.
Gamers looking to upgrade from an older graphics card might want to take a look at the two new GPUs. If you already have an RX 6800 XT or faster installed in your gaming PC, the RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT are not worth it.
Is Nvidia worth it as an alternative? It depends on what you value and how much you want to pay:
It is still true that Nvidia still offers the more modern feature set: With FSR 3, AMD can close the gap to DLSS, but Nvidia is still ahead. The Nvidia graphics cards are also significantly more expensive. AMD’s graphics cards have the advantage of being equipped with significantly more video memory.
Computerbase therefore writes that “there is no real winner” when comparing the current mid-range models from AMD and Nvidia.
When it comes to a graphics card, how important is whether I buy AMD or Nvidia?
