The War of the Worlds by HG Wells became legendary as a radio play by Orson Welles that caused mass panic and is now best known for the often underestimated remake by Steven Spielberg with Tom Cruise.

That’s what Battle of the Worlds is all about
The renowned scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry) and a colleague witness the impact of an object falling from the sky on Earth. Once there, it becomes clear to those present that it is not a normal celestial body, but a large metallic cylinder, the contents of which initiate an alien attack.
The aliens are able to override human technology through electrical impulses and use deadly radiation against humans. The military and its weapons fail because of the alien shields. Dr. Forrester is therefore desperately trying to find a scientific solution, but with the planet increasingly destroyed, time is running out.
Is Battle of the Worlds worth it?
Battle of the Worlds obviously clearly and strongly inspired the War of the Worlds remake, which is visible in many places. Despite mixed ratings according to Rotten Tomatoes, the Spielberg remake still made it into the top 20 of the 50 best sci-fi films after 2000 on Moviepilot.
Battle of the Worlds, on the other hand, is doing significantly better on the same platform than the remake, both among viewers and the specialist press. In addition, the story, with all of its previous implementations, landed in first place in our list of the 7 best alien invasions some time ago.
In the Moviepilot community, the older Battle of the Worlds also received a slightly better rating of 6.5 out of 10 than the remake with Tom Cruise, which only got 6 out of 10. The original should definitely be a recommendation for both sci-fi fans in general and for fans of the now better-known remake.
